Here are some photos of the last generation of Serbian Army conscripts. Beginning on Jan. 1 2010 the Serbian government has decided that the Serbian Armed Forces will do away with a conscript military and move to a 100% volunteer military.
This decision has received a mixed reaction across Serbian society as service in the military is deeply entrenched in Serbian culture, tradition and national sentiment.
In recognition of this, the Ministry of Defence has announced that Serbian citizens will continue to be able to serve in the military voluntarily allowing longstanding traditions of military service to continue. Serving in the military is seen by many Serbians as a rite of passage and in some regions of Serbia young men cannot marry until they have served in the military.
